Abstract

This talk aims to systematically present the current and expected synergies between artificial intelligence (AI) and additive manufacturing (AM) for advancing metamaterials and metamaterials-based devices with a special focus on the AI-enhanced design and AM of bioinspired, smart or multifunctional metamaterials in connection with healthcare. First, the talk presents the development of a conceptual engineering design methodology based on “constructive dialogues with generative AI” for creativity promotion in connection with metamaterials for healthcare. Second, the implementation and use of taxonomies and ontologies for describing the complex geometries of metamaterials is explained, as well as their applicability to taming generative AI tools for supporting metamaterials discovery and the ideation of
biomimetic devices and technologies. Third, the development and application of AI tools for predicting & controlling AM and post-processing results, with a clear focus on error minimization when manufacturing metamaterials, is presented. Finally, trends related to the automated generationand (bio)mechanical evaluation of bioinspired geometries and bio-metamaterials for personalized, high performance and smart or multifunctional medical devices are addressed.
