Collection Overview
Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Fuel cell technologies.
Fuel cells are devices that convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy through electrochemical reactions. These systems are characterised by their high efficiency and low environmental impact, making them a promising technology for sustainable energy solutions. Fuel cells can be found in various applications, from powering vehicles and portable devices to providing backup power for buildings and critical infrastructure. Recent advancements in fuel cell technology have focused on improving performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness; this has been driven by the latest progresses in materials science - such as the development of new catalysts and membranes - which have significantly enhanced the efficiency and lifespan of fuel cells. Additionally, research into alternative fuels, including hydrogen and biofuels, has expanded the potential applications of fuel cell technology.
This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 30th March 2026.
Why is this Collection important?
"Fuell cells offer a clean, efficient, and sustainable way to generate electricity. Unlike conventional combustion-based power sources, fuel cells produce electricity through electrochemical reactions; this makes them a key technology in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. This Collection will support research that explores the latest developments in fuel cells’ materials and designs as well as their integration in advanced applications." - Dr. Silvia Butera
Why submit to a Collection?
Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.
Who is involved?
