Call for papers: Microalgae and agriculture

This Collection welcomes original research on microalgae, including work on cultivation systems and agricultural applications such as biofertilizer, food supply and sustainability of agricultural systems.

Collection Overview

Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Microalgae and agriculture.

Microalgae are microscopic, photosynthetic organisms that live in diverse aquatic environments, from freshwater to marine ecosystems. These tiny organisms play an important role in the global carbon cycle through photosynthetic activity. In addition to research interest in the link between microalgae and oxygen production, microalgae are a rich source of high value nutrients and have begun to attract attention as a sustainable food.

This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 9th March 2026.

Why is this Collection important?

“The Collection links both Microalgae and agriculture unlikely and should attract wide audience from both sectors.” - Dr. Hussein Znad

“Microalgae represent a high added value renewable resource. Their biological properties might have huge impact in the future of food, feed and agriculture. This Collection is an opportunity of sharing knowledge, methodologies, new findings and discussing challenges on the benefits of these autotrophic microbes in agriculture.” - Dr. Christophe Brunet

“This Collection is unique and exciting to cover many important aspects and challenging areas of microalgal biotechnology. The potential application of microalgae in agriculture is well described in this collection. Any researcher who is working on these crucial research topics must submit to this collection.” - Dr. Pratyoosh Shukla

This Collection also supports and amplifies research related to SDG 2 - Zero HungerSDG 12 - Responsible consumption, and SDG 13 - Climate action.

Why submit to a Collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.
