Call for papers: Protein nanocages

This Collection welcomes submissions that advance our understanding of protein nanocages, including their design, assembly, architecture, function and applications in natural and engineered systems.

What is this collection about?

Protein nanocages are highly organized molecular assemblies found across biology, with viral capsids representing some of the best-known examples. These structures have important applications in biotechnology, medicine and scientific research, including targeted cargo delivery, compartmentalization and vaccine development. In this cross-journal Collection, Nature Communications, npj Structural Biology, npj Viruses and Scientific Reports welcome research that provides new insights into the design, assembly, architecture, function and applications of protein nanocages. Nature Communications, npj Structural Biology and npj Viruses will consider original Articles, Reviews and Perspectives, while Scientific Reports will consider original Articles.

Why is this collection important?

Protein nanocages are increasingly important platforms for biotechnology, synthetic biology and medicine. Advances in understanding how these structures assemble and function are enabling new opportunities in drug delivery, vaccine development, biomolecular engineering and the design of novel nanoscale systems. By bringing together research on both natural and engineered protein nanocages, this Collection aims to highlight emerging discoveries and encourage collaboration across multiple disciplines.

Why submit to a collection?

Collections like this one help attract and promote high-quality science. They are led by internal In-House Editors and supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.

Who is involved?

Nature Communications is edited by in-house professional editors.

npj Structural Biology is edited by a team of external academic editors.

npj Viruses is edited by a team of external academic editors.

Scientific Reports is managed by in-house professional editors and edited by Editorial Board Members.

Our editors work closely together to ensure the quality of our published papers and consistency in author experience.
