Call for papers: Rare Diseases

What is this collection about?  
Rare diseases, defined as conditions that affect a small percentage of the population, represent a significant challenge in medical research and healthcare. Collectively, these diseases encompass a wide array of genetic disorders, metabolic conditions, and other health issues, often resulting from complex genetic causes. The rarity of these conditions can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment, emphasizing the importance of advancing our understanding of rare disease diagnostics and treatment strategies. Improved insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases can facilitate the development of targeted therapies, making research in this field crucial for enhancing patient outcomes and addressing unmet medical needs.

Current research efforts are increasingly focused on elucidating the genetic and environmental factors contributing to rare diseases, alongside the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Techniques such as next-generation sequencing and advanced bioinformatics are paving the way for more accurate and timely diagnoses, while novel treatment modalities, including gene therapy and personalized medicine, are showing promise. This Collection aims to bring together research from various domains, including the genetic underpinnings of rare diseases, innovative diagnostic methods, and emerging treatment options. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Genetics for rare disease understanding and diagnostics
  • Targeted therapies and novel treatments for specific genetic disorders

  • Patient registries and data sharing initiatives

  • Preclinical work that lays the foundation for early diagnosis or potential treatment modalities

We welcome the submission of all papers relevant to Rare Diseases, including original research articles and Reviews. All submissions will be subject to the same review process and editorial standards as regular submissions at the participating journal.

Why is this collection important?  
Although individual rare diseases affect relatively small numbers of people, collectively they impact millions worldwide and represent a major public health challenge. Many rare diseases remain difficult to diagnose and treat, often resulting in prolonged diagnostic journeys and significant unmet medical needs for patients and their families.

Advances in genomics, bioinformatics, precision medicine, and innovative clinical research are rapidly improving our understanding of rare diseases and creating new opportunities for diagnosis and treatment. This Collection aims to highlight these advances, foster collaboration across disciplines, and support research that ultimately improves outcomes for people living with rare diseases.
