What is this collection about?
Many sustainable chemical and material solutions fail because they cannot operate under real world constraints. These constraints are particularly acute in many emerging and transition contexts but are increasingly relevant worldwide. With this single-journal Collection, the editors at Communications Sustainability invite manuscripts that highlight chemistry led and materials focused research that addresses these challenges through advances in chemical transformations, catalysis, electrochemistry, polymer and materials chemistry, and chemical process design. We encourage contributions that demonstrate how molecular design, reaction pathways, and processing strategies enable efficient, robust, and scalable performance beyond idealized laboratory conditions. Studies that explicitly explore performance tradeoffs, durability, and feasibility under constrained operating conditions are particularly encouraged, with applications across energy, food, water, and circular material systems. Communications Sustainability will consider original Articles, Reviews and Perspectives.

This is a cross-journal collection between Communications Sustainability. Authors are welcome to submit to any of the participating journals. All manuscripts published in the collection are hosted on a dedicated nature portfolio portal, giving articles high visibility beyond the journal they are published in.

Who is involved?
Guest editor for Communications Sustainability
Pradip Pachfule, PhD, S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, India
Dr. Pradip Pachfule received his PhD from the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, Pune (India). He then worked as a JSPS postdoctoral research fellow at the Advanced Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Kansai (Osaka, Japan), followed by positions as an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellow and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Technical University Berlin, Berlin (Germany). He is currently an Associate Professor at the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India. His research focuses on synthesis of covalent organic frameworks and their applications in photocatalytic water splitting, hydrogen peroxide generation and energy storage.
Farsa Ram, PhD, Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER), Indian Institute of Science, India
Dr. Farsa Ram is currently working as an assistant professor in the Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bengaluru, India. His group focuses on the development of advanced sustainable functional materials for micro energy harvesting & self-powered sensors, ion exchange materials, and functional coatings. He obtained his PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering from CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, and the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, India. Subsequently, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. He was a postdoc at the University of Chicago before joining his current position.
