Celebrating a Year of BMC’s New Agriculture and Livestock Journal Family

The journal family includes three new open access journals focusing on dairy, poultry and aquaculture research

In May 2024, BMC launched a new family of open access journals focused on Agriculture and Livestock. This family included two established open access journals, Agriculture & Food Security and Porcine Health Management, and three brand new open access journals focused on different groups of livestock: Dairy Science and Management, Poultry Science and Management, and Aquaculture Science and Management.

The aim of the journal family is for the journals in the family to support each other and create a stronger and more connected community of key scientists supporting the journals. This might be achieved by editors being on multiple editorial boards, and cross or sister collections. The three new journals were launched after extensive market analysis to understand where we should offer more journal options for researchers. All three are open access and peer reviewed, and as new launches we are able to offer waivers to cover the article processing charges.

Information about each of these journals is below.

Dairy Science and Management

Dairy Science and Management focuses on the welfare and management of all dairy animals, the production of dairy products and the related food safety and security considerations. Currently there are two collections open for submissions: ‘Assessing Animal Welfare in Dairy Farming’ and ‘Microbial Sensitivity Testing in Dairy’.

For information about waivers to cover the article processing charges or other submission queries, please contact dairysciencemanagement@biomedcentral.com

Poultry Science and Management

Poultry Science and Management focuses on the welfare and management of all poultry animals for both meat and eggs, the production of poultry products and the related food safety and security considerations. One collection is currently open for submissions: ‘Improving Poultry Husbandry and Welfare’. A future collection focusing on Salmonella is being prepared and will open for submissions this summer.

Aquaculture Science and Management

Aquaculture Science and Management focuses on the welfare and management of aquatic species, the related food safety and security considerations, and the industry’s relationship with the environment. Currently there are two collections open for submissions: ‘Aquaculture Interstices: Where Biofloc Dynamics, Microbes, Nutrition and Health Converge’ and ‘Impact of Aeromonas hydrophila on Aquaculture: Inflammation, Intestinal Changes and Antioxidant Responses’.

Agriculture & Food Security

Agriculture & Food Security aims to address the challenge of food security. It publishes articles within the field of food security research, with a particular focus on research that may inform more sustainable agriculture and food systems that better address local, regional, national and/or global food and nutritional insecurity. Agriculture & Food Security was accepted to ESCI in 2024 and the first impact factor will be announced this summer. One collection is currently open for submissions: ‘Building Resilience through Sustainable Food Environments and Diets’. Later this month we will open another collection to submissions ‘Food Security in High-Income Nations: Issues, Policies and Future Directions’.

Porcine Health Management

Porcine Health Management aims to publish relevant, novel and revised information regarding all aspects of swine health medicine and production. The journal provides a venue for global research on swine health and production, including infectious and non-infectious diseases, reproduction, epidemiology, management, economics, genetics, housing, nutrition, animal welfare and ethics, legislation, food safety, drugs and surgery. Porcine Health Management is the official journal of the European College of Porcine Health Management. The journal has an Impact Factor of 3.1 and is consistently in the first quartile for Veterinary Sciences. Currently there are two collections open for submissions: ‘Precision Livestock Farming in Pigs’ and ‘Advancing pig welfare through the five freedoms framework’.

With the Agriculture and Livestock family, we are able to offer researchers a place for their research from crop and soil science, to specific livestock research, and the environmental aspects of all agriculture research. We are very exited to see how the journals in this new family continue to grow and develop!
