From 'The exceptional value of intact forest ecosystems'. Watson et al., Nature Ecology & Evolution 2; 599-610 (2018).

As the terrestrial human footprint continues to expand, the amount of native forest that is free from significant damaging human activities is in precipitous decline. The remaining intact forests, such as the pictured Danum Valley, Borneo, should be accorded urgent conservation priority because of their value for biodiversity, carbon sequestration and storage, water provision, and the maintenance of indigenous cultures and human health.
