Mitochondrial biology is central to cellular health, as its dysfunction is implicated in cancer, neurodegeneration, and metabolic diseases. New therapeutic innovations in leveraging medicinal synthetic biology, including genome editing and small molecules, are key to targeting mitochondrial dysfunction and overcoming bioenergetic challenges. A major gap remains in understanding how mitochondria communicate with other organelles within cells and tissues—a challenge that can be addressed by integrating lipid and metabolic flux analyses (fluxomics) with high-resolution 3D imaging techniques, including volumetric electron microscopy.
The upcoming Keystone meeting 'Integrative Mitochondrial Medicine' aims to bridge cell and structural biology with dynamic metabolite profiling and bioenergetics. Sessions will explore mitochondrial genome and transcriptome editing and synthetic biology platforms to understand or enhance organelle crosstalk and reprogram metabolic pathways, advancing the field toward novel biomarkers and standardized protocols for multi-scale mitochondrial analyses.
