Prehabilitation before spinal surgery: Game-changer or hype?

Our scoping review dives into 23 studies featuring 36 articles including 2,964 patients, showing that tailored prehabilitation - especially exercise & education - can improve functioning, reduce pain & boost recovery.

But which approaches work best?

🔹 Most programs focus on education, often paired with exercise, daily activity training, or psychological support.
🔹 Prehab may reduce pain, improve function, and support mental well-being before surgery.
🔹 But who benefits most? We don’t know yet! There’s a huge variety in prehab approaches, and we need more structured studies to pinpoint what works best for different patients. Due to the different outcome measurements, training intensities and treatment settings, there is currently no standardized recommendation for optimal preoperative care...

One key takeaway? Personalized prehab might be the way forward—adapting the program to each patient’s needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

More research is needed, but the message is clear: getting prepared before surgery matters!

⚽ We are therefore staying on the ball and look forward to further research into the prehabilitation of patients awaiting spinal surgery.
