Abstract

In this webinar, I will introduce the basic concepts of a novel theory of color perception grounded in quantum information theory, developed since 2018 by Michel Berthier, Edoardo Provenzi, and collaborators. By reinterpreting the foundational works of Erwin Schrödinger and Howard L. Resnikoff from a quantum information perspective, this framework naturally reconciles trichromacy with Hering’s opponency theory, and provides precise definitions of key color attributes such as brightness, saturation, and hue. Moreover, the theory has genuine predictive power: it allows for a quantitative explanation of known perceptual phenomena and leads to new predictions, including the existence of uncertainty relations for chromatic opponency. Finally, the model directly yields an efficient white balance algorithm.
