Abstract
Scientific publications have a vibrant role in driving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) onward by advancing knowledge, multidisciplinary research, and promotion of global SDG’s friendly policy and practices. Since the SDGs were adopted, there has been a growing body of scholarship collaborating with these goals, enhancing global education and awareness. Scientific publications enable focus on cutting-edge research that aligns with the SDGs, thus influencing academic and public discussion of challenges and solutions towards sustainable development. Publishers play a significant role by, creating specialist journals, content platforms, and collections highlighting issues of sustainability. Some of the world’s most prestigious research centers and their affiliated journals and publishers have dedicated an effort to boost SDGs through promoting equitable access and cross-disciplinary innovation for sustainability. Bibliometric analyses of scientific reports recognize increased quantitative growth of SDG-related publications as evidence of the increasing interest of scientists and the broader academic community in the SDGs. However, there are inequalities in geographic representation and collaboration amongst different institutions that mirror the need for broadening collaborations within the research community to effectively address these issues. Scientific literature on SDG implementation and attainment comes in many different research outputs, including case studies highlighting social responsibility in higher education institutions, policy-based analysis, and technological advances addressing specific targets like climate action, food security, and renewable energy. Scientific institutes and publishers facilitate evidence-informed policy as well as encourage multi-stakeholder partnerships that are key to SDG progress through scientific communication and research works. Initiatives supporting researchers in achieving their work in alignment with SDGs and in directing them towards effective publication outlets enhance transdisciplinary integration of SDG agendas. In all, scientific publications are a pillar for the formulation of SDG implementation by facilitating the exchange of knowledge, stimulating cross-disciplinary innovation, enhancing global research equity, and informing policy and practice.
