Spectroscopic and thermal characterization of chemically modifed 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PCDA) and its sodium salt (PCDA-Na)

Sodium 10,12-pentacosadiynoate (PCDA-Na) was synthesized using two commonly employed neutralization routes involving NaOH and Na₂CO₃. The resulting materials were systematically characterized using FT-IR, PXRD, DSC, TGA, and SEM.

The study provides the first quantitative comparison of Na₂CO₃ vs. NaOH routes for
PCDA salt formation, revealing route-dependent crystallinity (ΔFWHM = 0.14°) and
thermal profles (ΔT
=11 °C). Unlike prior work on organic PDA salts, structure-thermal relationships via Δν(COO) were established with relevant decomposition mechanisms. These insights enable rational design of crystalline, thermally robust PDA precursors for sensing platforms.
