Abstract
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading causes of premature mortality worldwide, with cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes considered to be the key contributors. However, the global prevalence of kidney disease is higher than that of any of these four NCDs. In 2024, a Consensus Statement led by the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), European Renal Association (ERA) and International Society of Nephrology (ISN) called for kidney disease to be prioritized by the WHO as a major NCD driver of premature mortality.
