Winners of the 2025 Population Health Metrics Awards 🏆

We are delighted to announce the winners and participants of the 2025 Population Health Metrics reviewer and editor awards!

2025 Population Health Metrics Awards Scheme  

Editors-in-Chief of Population Health Metrics, Professors Shereen Hussein, Jonathan Samet (now editor emeritus) and Tim Adair, alongside publisher Alice Coe, developed the 2025 Award Scheme to celebrate those who reviewed and handled manuscripts in 2025. Population Health Metrics greatly appreciates the contributions of each reviewer and editor and we thank you all for your efforts. 

We are delighted to announce the winners of the 2025 Population Health Metrics Awards! The award program includes three categories: 

1. Early Career Researcher Reviewer Award 

2. Editorial Board Reviewer Award

3. Handling Editor Award 

Early Career Researcher Reviewer Award 

Winner: Dr Érika Carvalho De Aquino, PhD, MPH, Brazil

About:

The Early Career Researcher Reviewer Award celebrates the reviewers who have published their first paper within the last ten years. We would like to congratulate Dr Érika Carvalho De Aquino as the winner of the 2025 Early Career Researcher Reviewer Award!  

Dr Carvalho de Aquino received her master's degree and Doctorate in Tropical Medicine and Public Health from Tropical Medicine and Public Health at the Institute of Tropical Pathology and Public Health of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). She currently works as an Assistant Researcher at the Center for Strategic Studies of the Presidency of Fiocruz. 

Award:

Upon receiving the award, Dr Carvalho De Aquino will begin a year‑long mentorship with an Associate Editor. This mentorship will provide focused guidance on manuscript development, editorial and career progression and will offer opportunities to expand professional networks. 

The journal also offers the winner one pre‑submission enquiry to the Editor‑in‑Chief, who will provide early feedback on the manuscript’s suitability for Population Health Metrics.  

We are thrilled to offer these opportunities to Dr Carvalho De Aquino, and we thank her once more for her support!

Editorial Board Reviewer Award 

Winner: Dr José L. Peñalvo, PharmD, PhD, Spain

About:

The Editorial Board Reviewer Award celebrates editorial board members who have reviewed for for Population Health Metrics in 2025. We would like to congratulate Dr José L. Peñalvo  as the winner of the Editorial Board Reviewer Award!  

Dr Peñalvo attended Complutense University of Madrid, where he received his PharmD and Doctorate in Human Nutrition. He currently works at the Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid, where he acts as a researcher and Director for National Centre of Epidemiology. 

Award:

Dr Peñalvo will have the opportunity for a call with the Editor(s)-in-Chief of Population Health Metrics. This call is intended to provide a thoughtful discussion on career development and to offer personal insights into the experience of working with the journal.  

We thank Dr Peñalvo for his continuous support of the journal both as a reviewer and an editor.

Handling Editor Award 

Winner: Dr Periklis Charalampous, PhD, Belgium

About:

The Handling Editor Award celebrates an associate or guest editor who has shown great care and dedication in their handling of manuscripts for Population Health Metrics. We are proud to congratulate Dr Periklis Charalampous as the winner of this year’s Handling Editor Award!  

Dr Charalampous attended Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands, where he received a PhD in Public Health Epidemiology. He now acts as a researcher at the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters at the University of Louvain in Brussels, Belgium. 

Award:

Dr Charalampous will receive a certificate and one 100% APC waiver to publish an article in Population Health Metrics. The journal greatly appreciates Dr Charalampous' editorial efforts. 


Once again, congratulations to the winners of this year’s Population Health Metrics Awards and thank you to all who contributed to reviewing manuscripts in 2025. We will be conducting Q&A interview blogs with each winner to congratulate them personally and learn more about their research and connection with the journal.
