Researchers as Street Sweepers: Clearing Paths Through Complexity

I recorded a simple scene: a street sweeper clearing a large yard covered with fallen leaves. At first glance, it looked like an ordinary act of maintenance.   But the longer I watched, the more it reminded me of research. Yet much of our work is surprisingly similar to sweeping leaves.
