What is this collection about?

The increasing demand for artificial intelligence, edge computing, and sustainable technologies is driving the search for electronic materials that offer enhanced functionality with lower energy consumption. Ferroic materials, including ferroelectrics, antiferroelectrics, and multiferroics, are attracting significant interest owing to their non-volatile behaviour and tunable switching of order parameters, offering exciting opportunities for next-generation information processing, sensing, and actuation technologies.

This Collection highlights recent advances in ferroelectric, antiferroelectric, and multiferroic materials and devices for energy-efficient electronics and high-performance AI applications. We welcome contributions addressing the fundamental physics of polarization switching, domain dynamics, phase transitions, and nanoscale ferroic phenomena, as well as advances in materials synthesis, characterization, modelling, and device engineering. Topics of interest include non-volatile memory technologies, neuromorphic and in-memory computing, hardware accelerators for AI applications, energy-efficient logic devices, and emerging concepts that exploit ferroic functionality for enhanced computing performance. Contributions on antiferroelectric materials, including high-energy-density storage, electrocaloric effects, and innovative switching mechanisms, are also encouraged, together with studies exploring ferroic materials in sensors, actuators, and multifunctional electronic systems, where coupled electrical, mechanical, and thermal responses enable intelligent and adaptive functionalities.

Communications Materials will consider original Articles, Reviews and Perspectives. All submissions will be subject to the same editorial criteria and review process as regular submissions at Communications Materials.

Why is this collection important?

This collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 9 - Industry, innovation and infrastructure.

Why submit to a collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by In-House Editors who are experts in their fields and supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.

Who is involved?

Communications Materials is edited by both in-house professional editors and Editorial Board Members.
