Collection Overview

Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Laser micromachining.

Laser micromachining has emerged as a powerful and versatile technique for the precise modification and structuring of materials at microscales. Its ability to deliver high-resolution patterning with minimal thermal damage makes it indispensable across a wide range of applications - from microelectronics and photonics to biomedical devices and advanced manufacturing. Recent advances in ultrafast laser systems, beam shaping, and real-time process monitoring have significantly expanded the capabilities and control of laser-material interactions.

This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 20th July 2026.

Why is this Collection important?

"From my perspective, this Collection on laser micromachining is highly relevant because it sits at the core of modern manufacturing for semiconductors, optics, medical devices, and advanced materials. It matters to the wider world since better control of heat input, precision, and defect formation directly impacts yield, reliability, and sustainability in high-value products. I’m excited about this Collection because it can connect fundamental laser–material interaction science with practical process windows and real industrial constraints." - Prof. Yu-Lung Lo

Why submit to a Collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.

Who is involved?

Guest Editors:

  • Jijun Feng, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, China
  • Tsing-Hua Her, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, USA
  • Yu-Lung Lo, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan
  • Barbara Previtali, Politecnico di Milano, Italy

Internal Team:

  • In-House Editor: Silvia Butera, Scientific Reports, Germany
  • Commissioning Editor: Robert Moran, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
  • Managing Editor: Rebecca Chan, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
