Malocclusions
This Collection welcomes original research into malocclusions, including studies exploring their diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and biology.
Collection Overview
Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Malocclusions.
Malocclusion, or misalignment of the teeth, can lead to oral health complications as well as changes in facial structure and speech problems. The etiology of malocclusions remains unclear, and although many are successfully treated through orthodontics, in some cases orthodontics may be difficult or insufficient. Therefore, it is important to increase our understanding of the biology of malocclusions and improve malocclusion diagnosis and treatment.
This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 28th January 2026.
Why is this Collection important?
“Malocclusions remain a pervasive global oral-health challenge, impacting aesthetics, function and quality of life across populations. With advances in imaging, artificial intelligence, digital workflows, and interdisciplinary therapeutics, we are at a pivotal moment for redefining how malocclusions are diagnosed, stratified and managed.
This Collection aims to bring together original research, reviews and methodological innovations that:
- deepen mechanistic understanding of malocclusion etiology (genetic, epigenetic, developmental, environmental)
- enhance diagnostics (2D/3D imaging, AI-based cephalometric analysis, biomarker studies)
- advance treatment planning (digital orthodontics, aligner therapy, skeletal anchorage, interdisciplinary care)
- evaluate outcomes and long-term stability (clinical trials, longitudinal cohort studies, real-world evidence)
- explore global and population-based perspectives (epidemiology in low- and middle-income countries, access to care, cost-effectiveness)
- address challenges and opportunities in implementation (digital workflows in resource-limited settings, AI ethics in orthodontics, patient-centred outcomes).
Your work will be part of a focused thematic collection, increasing discoverability among peers in malocclusion and orthodontic research.” - Dr. Anand Marya
Why submit to a Collection?
Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.
Who is involved?
