Since the first microbe harnessed chemical reactions for energy and growth, life has been shaping ocean chemistry. In turn, changing ocean chemistry has shaped the evolution of life, opening pathways for innovative metabolisms and increasingly complex organisms. Now, human activities are also shaping marine chemistry and ecosystems.   

A collection of news features, commentaries, Review articles, and original research papers from multiple Nature Research journals probes the interactions between ocean life and chemistry, and how humans are affecting this balance. From Archaea to exoplanets, this collection highlights the state-of-the-art in our understanding of The Living Ocean.
