The Ukuwala Mahiate ritual is an integral part of the cultural traditions of the indigenous people of Mamala, Moluccas, Indonesia. It is a fusion of Islamic teachings and local wisdom, comprising various ritual elements such as palm sticks, coconut oil, and more. The ritual is held on the 8th day of Shawwal and integrates the understanding and knowledge of fasting in Ramadan, sunnah fasting in Shawwal, and the Ukuwala Mahiate ritual itself. The ritual involves symbolic communication through non-verbal means, where participants beat each other until they get injured and bleed, and then are healed using coconut oil. The ritual holds deep meaning and significance for the Mamala people, representing their relationship with Allah, community unity, individual identity, and even supernatural power.

Moving as a European amidst multiple crises: Patterns of belonging and exclusion

This special issue addresses the phenomenon of intra-European migration. Mobility and migration processes within Europe have received a great deal of academic attention since the beginning of the 21st century due to their intensification and diversification, as the profile of those migrating from one European country to another has become increasingly varied. We aim to expand upon the abundance of analyses that emphasise the labour element (job loss or underemployment) as a cause for emigration by exploring processes of inequality, segmentation, exclusion and hierarchisation in intra-European movements. This perspective requires recognising the politicisation of intra-European migration on an individual level, attending to issues of identity and belonging, as well as an institutional one, by exploring the political treatment of this migration, including measures aimed at facilitating the return of these migrants. The aim is to expand and complexify the analysis of existing imaginaries of migratory trajectories.
