Zika is still a top news story around the world, and a wave of Zika studies are beginning to make their way out the labs. Some of these are aiming to identify the links and risks between the Zika virus and birth defects. Studies so far are relatively small, but the evidence for a link between Zika and microcephaly does appear to be growing (for example, here, here and here). A recent report on the BBC highlights that, in Columbia, doctors are potentially seeing a link between Zika and ‘creeping paralysis’, although this has not yet been scientifically proven.
Progress in understanding Zika will no doubt be helped by the promise of open-access Zika research papers for the foreseeable future, regardless of the usual publishing model for the journal (including the Nature family)
