About Kai Xiao
My research interests include surface water-groundwater interactions in coastal zones, carbon/nitrogen source-sink processes in coastal wetlands, hydrological and environmental effects of benthic disturbances, subsurface hydrological processes in estuaries/lagoons/bays, and offshore water quality evaluation. During the past five years, three major accomplishments have been obtained:
1. Based on in situ, high frequency continuous monitoring and coupled hydrogeochemical numerical simulation, the complex surface water and groundwater interaction process, influencing factors and environmental effects of coastal wetlands were systematically studied.
2. The bioturbation (digging and burring) effects on sediment characteristics, REDOX conditions at the sedimental-water interface and hydrological interaction, salt transport and chemical element (carbon, iron, manganese, sulfur, phosphorus, etc.) behavior were systematically investigated.
3. Based on the radioisotope model, we innovatively put forward the circulation amount considering the discharge of submarine groundwater, and the methods were further applied in the typical bays in China (e.g., Liaodong Bay, Jiaozhou Bay, Daya Bay).
