Nature has long been a master of surface engineering—from the self-cleaning properties of the lotus leaf to the remarkable adhesion of gecko feet and the drag-reducing textures of shark skin. This new collection aims to become a premier platform for cutting-edge research that deciphers these natural strategies and translates them into advanced materials and devices with transformative applications.

The collection is led by our Associate Editors, Prof. Xianghui Hou (Northwestern Polytechnical University) and Prof. Yanqiu Zhu (University of Exeter). Their expertise and leadership will guide the collection in fostering high-impact research that bridges the gap between fundamental understanding and real-world engineering solutions.

This collection is mainly about biomimetic anti-icing, anti-fouling, and wettability-regulated surfaces and interfaces, biomimetic adhesion and friction-reducing surfaces and interfaces, biomimetic optical and sensing functional surfaces and interfaces, biomimetic biomedical surfaces and interfaces, and biomimetic surfaces and interfaces for extreme environmental adaptation.
