Collection Overview
Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Aerosol–cloud interactions.
The interactions between aerosols and clouds are significant elements of uncertainty in climate modelling. As condensation nuclei, aerosols influence cloud properties such as droplet size and frequency, with corresponding effect on cloud albedo and precipitation patterns. However, difficulties in aerosol measurement and the complex nature of the interactions continue to present challenges.
This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. Narrative review articles are also welcomed, to our sister journal Scientific Reviews. We are welcoming submissions until 16th September 2026.
Why is this Collection important?
"In modern meteorology, one of the most concerning questions that weather prediction models address is aerosol-cloud interaction. The complexity, in terms of aerosols' composition and concentration, has turned their effect so elusive on cloud and precipitation processes that prediction models often find it difficult to simulate the cloud properties, including the precipitation estimates. A detailed observational study, coupled with modelling and numerical simulations, is essential to trace the aerosols' interaction with cloud and precipitation processes across a broad spatial scale. This special Collection by Scientific Report is exactly aligned in that direction. I am excited to share that this Collection is titled to seek answers for some of the vital questions in this context, i.e., how does aerosol composition modulate the cloud properties, how does the new particle formation alter the cloud and precipitation fields, etc. A compendium focusing on aerosol-cloud interaction certainly has an incremental effect towards expanding the horizon. The professionals and researchers working in this field are welcome to submit their experimental or modelling studies to this special Collection. "
