Collection Overview
Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Exercise oncology.
Exercise and physical activity are important for the physical and mental health of cancer patients. Exercise programs can help survivors regain strength and stamina and reduce the risk of recurrence. Patients may also gain more immediate benefits from exercise, such as reduced adverse effects of treatment. Oncologists should collaborate with psychiatrists, exercise physiologists, and physical therapists to implement treatment plans for the best patient outcomes.
This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. Narrative review articles are also welcomed, to our sister journal Scientific Reviews. We are welcoming submissions until 30th April 2027.
Why is this Collection important?
"I see exercise as medicine, particularly in exercise oncology, as an opportunity to move beyond viewing the body as a collection of separate systems. Exercise has the unique capacity to influence multiple systems simultaneously, allowing changes in one system to interact with and potentially amplify changes in others. This interconnected, synergistic effect reflects a level of whole-body coherence that modern medicine does not always emphasize. Exercise may therefore offer a way to support the body’s integrated functioning, even when we cannot fully tease apart or explain every mechanism involved. Research as a whole can help deepen our understanding of these connections so that more people can access and benefit from the broad, synergistic effects of exercise."
