Collection Overview
Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on The future of food from the sea and oceans.
As the global population continues to expand, the seas and oceans represent a valuable resource for addressing critical challenges related to food security and sustainable development. Exploring sustainable aquaculture technologies, preserving marine biodiversity, and understanding how the oceans can contribute to improving the global food system are key focus for future food innovation.
This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 21st May 2026.
This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 2- Zero Hunger.
Why is this Collection important?
"The future of food from the sea and oceans represents one of the most exciting frontiers in sustainable food systems. With growing global demand for protein and the urgent need to protect terrestrial ecosystems, harnessing marine and blue biotechnology offers immense potential for circular bioeconomy solutions—from cultivated seafood and algae-based biomanufacturing to novel marine-derived bioactives. I’m excited about this collection because it integrates innovation with sustainability, bridging food security, environmental stewardship, and technological advancement. Researchers should contribute to this collection to shape the dialogue on how ocean resources can be responsibly leveraged to nourish the planet’s future."
