Collection Overview
Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on The use of artificial intelligence in sport science.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into sports science to enhance performance analysis, optimise training load management, refine injury risk modelling, and support real-time decision-making in both elite and recreational sports. Research in this field applies machine learning, computer vision, wearable-sensor analytics, and predictive modelling to quantify athlete behaviour, physiological responses, and biomechanical patterns with greater precision than traditional methods.
This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. Narrative review articles are also welcomed, to our sister journal Scientific Reviews. We are welcoming submissions until 19th February 2026.
Why is this Collection important?
"This Collection on 'The use of artificial intelligence in sport science' is particularly exciting because it brings together cutting-edge approaches such as machine learning, computer vision, wearable sensors, and predictive analytics to better understand performance, health, and injury risk in sport. AI has the potential to transform how athletes train, compete, and recover, making this a highly relevant area for both researchers and practitioners. I expect the collection to accelerate innovation, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and help establish new standards for data-driven sport science. Researchers should consider submitting because it offers a focused platform to showcase impactful work in a rapidly growing and influential field."
- Dr. Salvatore Tedesco, Guest Editor
Why submit to a collection?
Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.
Who is involved?

- Pedro Forte, ISCE Douro, Portugal
- Szymon Kuliś, Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw, Poland
- Salvatore Tedesco, University College Cork, Ireland
Internal Team:
- In-House Editor: Shelby Bollen, Scientific Reports, India
- Commissioning Editor: Sophie Gray, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
