New Collection Launch: Eye–Brain Axis in Neurodegenerative Disease - Mechanisms and Diagnostics

We are pleased to announce a new collection in Neuroretina: Eye–Brain Axis in Neurodegenerative Disease - Mechanisms and Diagnostics.

We are pleased to announce a new collection in Neuroretina: Eye–Brain Axis in Neurodegenerative Disease - Mechanisms and Diagnostics.

The eye–brain axis has emerged as a compelling framework for understanding neurodegeneration. As accessible extensions of the central nervous system, the retina and optic nerve provide a unique window into brain pathology, where structural and functional changes may precede or reflect disease progression.

This collection brings together work that advances both mechanistic insight and diagnostic innovation across this interface.

Scope

We welcome high-quality submissions spanning experimental, clinical, and translational research, including:

  • Mechanistic insight
    • Neuroinflammatory signalling across retina and brain
    • Microglial and astrocyte activation
    • Neurovascular coupling and ocular perfusion
  • Disease focus: retinal and optic nerve changes in disorders such as
    • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
    • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
    • Huntington’s disease
  • Diagnostics and biomarkers
    • Imaging-based markers (e.g. OCT, OCT-A)
    • Functional testing (e.g. visual evoked potentials)
    • Emerging digital biomarkers
  • Models and translation
    • Preclinical and transgenic models
    • Imaging-guided tracking of visual pathway degeneration

The collection particularly encourages work integrating molecular, imaging, and clinical data, with clear translational relevance.

Why submit?

  • Strong journal fit: dedicated to neuroretina research linking ophthalmology and neurology
  • Open access visibility: global reach and accessibility
  • Translational emphasis: focus on clinically meaningful advances

Submit your work

Submission deadline: 12 March 2027
