Unraveling Two Decades of ENSO Forecasts
ENSO forecasting is vital for providing early warnings of climate anomalies and extreme weather globally. It enables better preparedness and decision-making in sectors like agriculture, water management, public health, and disaster risk reduction, helping mitigate socioeconomic impacts.
When Science Surprises You
Science often takes us on unexpected journeys. You start with a clear hypothesis, meticulously design an experiment, and then... the results don’t align. Instead of proving or disproving your original idea, you stumble upon something entirely different—something you didn’t anticipate.
Interpretable Deep Learning Approach Reveals the Critical Role of Sea Surface Salinity in Long-Lead ENSO Forecasting
Recent advancements in climate modeling have uncovered the pivotal role of Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) in enhancing long-lead ENSO forecasting. Utilizing a deep learning model have extended the ENSO forecast lead time to 24 months, emphasizing post-2000 El Niño events.
Change of El Niño onset location around 1970
A marked interdecadal shift of El Niño onset location occurred around 1970, that is, El Niño started its warming in eastern Pacific before 1970 but in western Pacific after 1970. The current study reveals the role of the interdecadal mean state change in causing the El Niño onset location shift.
