Collection Overview

Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Clinical metabolomics

Metabolomics is the study of small molecule metabolites in biospecimens, such as urine or blood. It can provide researchers with an insight into alterations within metabolic pathways, including metabolite dynamics and interactions. Clinically, metabolomics can be used to identify metabolic dysregulation in disease states, markers of disease, how an individual is responding to therapeutic interventions, or investigation of targets for drug design.

This will be a Collection of original research papers  and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 21st July 2026.

Why is this Collection important?

"The role of metabolomics in clinical applications is rapidly advancing and holds immense potential to transform healthcare. By providing a real-time snapshot of an individual's biochemical state, it serves as a crucial tool for Precision Medicine. Research efforts focusing on integrating metabolomics into clinical practice will be promoted through this collection paving the way for improved diagnostics and personalized treatments."

- Dr. Helen Gika, Guest Editor

Why submit to a collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.

Who is involved?

Guest Editors:

  • Christopher Gerner, University of Vienna, Austria
  • Helen Gika, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
  • Jan Krumsiek, Weill Cornell Medicine, USA
  • Masahiro Sugimoto, Keio University, Japan
  • Julien Wist, Universidad del Valle, Colombia

Internal Team:

  • In-House Editor: Shelby BollenScientific Reports, UK
  • Commissioning Editor: Sophie Gray, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
