Collection Overview

Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Nanostructure patterning

Nanostructure patterning is the process of fabricating nanoscale structures on the surface of a material used for controlling and creating desirable material properties for diverse applications. By integrating top-down and bottom-up patterning methods, new hybrid fabrication approaches are achieving greater precision, facilitating greater complexity in structural design. These innovations are contributing to advances in many fields, including electronics, drug delivery, and both medical and structural diagnostics.

This will be a Collection of original research papers  and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 7th May 2026.

Why is this Collection important?

"Nanostructure patterning lies at the heart of modern nanotechnology, enabling precise control of materials’ physical, chemical, and biological properties. As industries increasingly rely on nanoscale design—from next-generation electronics to targeted drug delivery—the ability to fabricate and tailor nanostructures with atomic precision is becoming essential for innovation across science, engineering, and medicine.

This Collection brings together cutting-edge advances that bridge top-down and bottom-up fabrication methods, opening new frontiers in hybrid nanomanufacturing. I am particularly excited to see how creative approaches to nanoscale patterning can unlock unprecedented functionalities and foster interdisciplinary breakthroughs across diverse application areas.

By highlighting emerging nanofabrication strategies and their practical applications, this Collection aims to accelerate knowledge exchange and inspire new design paradigms in nanostructured materials. It has the potential to shape future directions in nanoengineering by linking fundamental patterning science with real-world technological progress.

Authors will have the opportunity to showcase their innovative research to a global audience within a focused and rapidly evolving field. This Collection offers enhanced visibility, interdisciplinary engagement, and the chance to contribute to defining the next generation of nanoscale fabrication technologies."

Why submit to a collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.

Who is involved?

Guest Editors:

  • Chirodeep Bakli, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India
  • Chang-Hwan Choi, Stevens Institute of Technology, USA
  • Chin Seong Lim, University of Nottingham Malaysia, Malaysia

Internal Team:

  • In-House Editor: Shital BondeScientific Reports, UK
  • Commissioning Editor: Robert Moran, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
  • Managing Editor: Eleanor Smith, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
