The origin of life is one of the main scientific questions at the interface of chemistry, physics, biology, geochemistry, and even astronomy. How did biologically relevant organic molecules form from relatively simple molecules present on the early Earth? How did chemical reactions evolve into our contemporary metabolism? How can the early Earth be mimicked in the laboratory? Prebiotic chemistry attempts to address those questions experimentally and theoretically. In recent years, tremendous progress has been made in the field, for example, by linking astro- and geochemical conditions to the synthesis of the building blocks of life, advancing our understanding of the evolution of chemical reaction systems and the assembly of minimal cells.

This Collection will showcase and highlight recent developments in key areas of prebiotic chemistry, including but not limited to the exploration of extraterrestrial carbon sources; the study of prebiotic conditions and the emergence of biologically relevant molecules (such as nucleotides, RNA, DNA, and peptides); and protocell formation.

We hope that the Collection will additionally serve to enhance the field’s visibility within the wider community. The team of Editors working on this Collection is:
