Potential of Biorefineries for Low Carbon Fuels and Renewable Chemicals Production
Transitioning away from fossil fuels is crucial to mitigate the effects of global warming and its consequences. Low-emission fuels, including liquid and gaseous biofuels (hydrogen, methane, ethanol, ammonia) play an important role in decarbonizing parts of the energy system. To expedite the shift towards a sustainable, circular economy, there is an increasing need for low carbon fuels and chemicals. The development of sustainable technology is crucial to produce low-carbon, environmentally friendly fuel that can overcome economic and technical challenges. Biogenic waste, wastewater, and biomass have emerged as promising feedstocks to produce biofuels, contributing to the development of a green economy. The production of fuels and chemicals from renewable feedstocks through fermentation process has gained considerable attention in the past two decades. Understanding the nature and composition of biogenic waste/wastewater used as feedstock and its availability is essential for determining the overall productivity and economics.
Biorefineries are crucial in transforming the energy industry by transforming renewable feedstock into low carbon fuels and chemicals. A biorefinery can potentially process range of feedstock, such as industrial and agricultural waste/residuals, to produce multitude of biobased products which include raw materials for food, feed, energy, and fertilizers.
This Topical Collection will focus on collecting articles that emphasize the principles of biorefineries and their application in the production of fuels and chemicals.

Innovative Approaches in Remediation of Emerging Pollutants: Harnessing Nanotechnology for Sustainable Solutions
The increasing prevalence of emerging pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals, PFAS, and microplastics, poses significant threats to environmental and human health. Traditional remediation techniques often fall short in effectively addressing these contaminants, necessitating the exploration of novel approaches. Recent advancements in nanotechnology present unique opportunities for developing innovative solutions that enhance pollutant removal efficiency and minimize ecological impacts. By leveraging the unique properties of nanomaterials, researchers can pioneer strategies that not only address contamination but also promote environmental sustainability.
The motivation for launching this collection is rooted in the urgent need for effective remediation methods that align with the principles of the circular economy. As industries and communities strive to mitigate pollution, the integration of nanotechnology into remediation processes offers promising pathways for resource recovery and wastewater treatment. This collection seeks to highlight the latest research and practical applications in the field, showcasing how nanotechnology can be harnessed for photocatalysis, advanced oxidation processes, and bioremediation. By fostering collaboration among researchers and practitioners, we aim to accelerate the transition toward sustainable solutions for emerging pollutants.
The purpose of this Collection is to compile a comprehensive body of work that addresses the challenges and opportunities presented by the remediation of emerging pollutants through nanotechnology. We invite submissions that explore a wide range of topics, including innovative materials and methods, case studies demonstrating successful applications, and theoretical frameworks guiding future research.
