Formulation Matters: Influence of Water Content and Packaging on Stability and Safety of Sevoflurane
Published in Biomedical Research
While regulatory designations of “therapeutic equivalence” assure similar clinical efficacy, they do not account for formulation-specific chemical behavior. Sevoflurane stability, and patient and equipment safety are significantly influenced by water content and pack aging material. Awareness of these factors is essential, particularly in high-volume operating environments, teaching hospitals, and resource-limited settings where vaporizers are often shared. A proactive, evidence-based approach to formulation selection can reduce the risk of HF formation, equipment corrosion, and adverse events. Anesthesiologists must recognize that formulation matters, not only for efficacy but for the safety of patients, staff, and the devices they rely on.
