Abstract

The main aim of this study is to establish the relationships among hydrological parameters and riverbank erosion as a consequence of repetitive effects of all these during the year 2011 through 2013. The two common statistical techniques used for flood frequency analysis are Lognormal and Log-Pearson Type III distributions for data recorded at National Highway (NH-127) crossing gauge site have been determined using flood frequency and stage-discharge curves for a period of 60 years. The digitised banklines from the satellite images of IRS LISS-III, 2011–2013 have been brought to a common coordinate system in a GIS environment and eroded areas were calculated through overlay analysis. The established statistical relationships and the estimated trend line of flood and overall erosion of the Puthimari River from 2011 to 2013 show a negative correlation. The coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.698) reveals that 69.8% variation in the eroded area has been negatively controlled by flood events. We concluded that the occurrence of the flood is chronical and the bank erosion is controlled by other factors than the hydrological parameters in this river system which may be more influential than floods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023.
