About the Webinar 

In this special webinar, we will introduce the newly-launched open access journal Advanced Metamaterials, published by Springer Nature.

Editor in Chief Prof. Chris Geddes, along with Josh Bayliss (Senior Publisher) and Christian Kohl (Commissioning Editor) will present:

  • An introduction to Prof. Chris D. Geddes, the Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Metamaterials
  • An overview of the journal
  • Aims & scope and the types of papers we’re looking to publish
  • A look at the currently open collections
  • Time for questions – Professor Geddes will then deliver an online seminar (25 mins plus 15 mins for questions) on one aspect of his research, "Fluorophore-Induced Plasmonic Current from Plasmonically Active Metasurfaces"

About the Journal

The decision to launch a new journal is never a simple one, and at Springer Nature we extensively analyse data to make sure that there is a need for a new journal, given current publication numbers, citations, and more. It became clear from initial conversations with one of our seasoned Editors-in-Chief, Chris Geddes, Editor of our Journal of Fluorescence  (2024 IF: 3.1) and  Plasmonics (2024 IF:  4.3) that the market needed a new journal in the area of metamaterials.  

We are delighted to announce that the open access journal Advanced Metamaterials has now launched with a full editorial board of key figures in the field, and is now accepting submissions. Editor-in-Chief Chris Geddes had the below to say about the launch: 

"For over a decade we have seen the slow emergence of metamaterials; materials for the manipulation of electromagnetic radiation and acoustic waves as well as enhancing material mechanical properties. These unique materials are artificial materials, not found in nature. Their unique properties arise from the materials' unique organized structure and the way their constituent building block elements are arranged, rather than from the inherent characteristics of the materials themselves. These building block elements within the metamaterials are smaller than the wavelength of the radiation they interact with. Applications of metamaterials are starting to rapidly expand, particularly for materials and life science applications. 

Applications of metamaterials for electromagnetic radiation manipulation can be found in electronics, optics with rapidly growing applications in advanced communications. These materials can bend light in non-conventional ways (negative refraction), absorb all electromagnetic radiation hitting the material as well as improving optical high-resolution imaging. Acoustic metamaterials are also finding applications in sound isolation / proofing and vibrational dampening. We are also seeing mechanical metamaterials finding significant applications in both energy and solar harvesting.

While metamaterials have been known for well over a decade, their development and applications today are rapidly expanding, which I attribute to the scientific community’s ability to both design and fabricate these unique materials, which was much more difficult to achieve a decade ago. The onset of high-end supercomputing, artificial intelligence (AI) and our ability to much more easily nanofabricate materials has led to the explosion of metamaterials-based research both at Universities and Industry alike. Subsequently, with the help of several talented colleagues at Springer/Nature we have been able to assemble an energetic and diverse editorial board to launch this new journal and address this growing need."

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in regions with high prevalence rates and co-infections. The interplay between TB and various co-infections (including bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal), complicates diagnosis and treatment strategies. Advances in molecular diagnostics and imaging techniques have improved our understanding of how these co-morbidities affect TB pathogenesis and treatment outcomes. However, the challenge of managing drug-resistant TB adds an additional layer of complexity, necessitating a comprehensive approach that integrates the latest research findings with clinical practice.

Research into TB of all stages and its co-infections is crucial for addressing the rising incidence of drug resistance and improving patient outcomes. Recent studies have identified critical biomarkers for early detection and prognosis, highlighting the role of rapid diagnostic tools in the clinical setting. Additionally, understanding the mechanisms of co-infections has led to tailored treatment regimens that maximize efficacy while minimizing adverse effects. Nonetheless, gaps remain in our knowledge of optimal management strategies for these complex cases, emphasizing the need for ongoing research in this field.

Future research endeavors should focus on the development of more effective diagnostic techniques and treatment protocols that consider the multifaceted interactions between TB and its co-infections. Innovations in personalized medicine may lead to targeted therapies that address specific pathogen interactions, ultimately enhancing patient recovery rates.
