Why lighting became the real design problem in interior design studios

Whenever people talk about designing a studio for interior design students, the conversation usually settles on layout, furniture, and how much space each student gets to work. But the deeper this research went, the clearer it became that one factor was shaping student behavior more than any of that: lighting.

That observation became the starting point of this research.

Looking beyond the layout Most studio designs are built around functional requirements — enough room to work, enough surfaces for models and drawings, enough seating for a class. But the research kept returning to a different question: does the lighting in these studios actually support the creative and cognitive work happening inside them, or is it simply whatever was left over once the layout was fixed?

The starting premise was straightforward: good studios have to balance three things together — studio design, lighting, and human behavior — because lighting that isn't chosen deliberately ends up working against the very creativity a studio is meant to nurture.

Discovering that lighting shapes more than visibility Across the research, one point kept resurfacing: light doesn't just make work visible, it actively shapes mood, focus, and even physical wellbeing. The intensity, color, and reflection of light off walls, ceilings, and furniture all register as behavioral cues, not just visual ones.

Natural daylight entering through skylights behaves very differently from artificial lighting. Daylight scatters and shifts through the day, creating what the research describes as an intimate, changing quality in a space, while artificial sources hold a constant output regardless of time of day. That constancy has a cost: sustained exposure to certain artificial lighting conditions has been linked to disrupted body rhythms, mood changes, and even documented health effects — including impacts tied to fluorescent lighting specifically, and to melatonin suppression under certain light exposure.

Learning from how positioning and color were handled Rather than treating "more light" as automatically better, the research pointed toward deliberate positioning and control. A north-facing opening placed above a working surface delivers directional light without glare — the kind of setup a painter relies on to avoid harsh contrast while working. Skylights need the same care: their shape and placement have to be worked out against sun position and weather conditions across the day, not just for one ideal moment.

Simple physical details mattered as much as the overall design. A hood built over the top of a window stops light from spilling onto the ceiling and washing out the intended contrast in a room. Reflective or colored ceilings change how light bounces back into a space, sometimes undermining the very lighting effect a designer is trying to create.

Comparing what students need with what most studios provide One of the more revealing parts of this research was comparing what the human body and behavior actually need from lighting against what many existing studios provide. The literature reviewed pointed to a real gap: prolonged exposure to poorly chosen industrial lighting has been tied to problems ranging from fatigue and irritability to more serious documented health effects, particularly for people spending long hours, day after day, under the same light source — exactly the pattern of studio life for design students.

At the same time, studies on workplace lighting suggested that better-controlled exposure — including timed exposure to brighter light during work hours — measurably improved performance and behavioral outcomes compared to poorly regulated lighting conditions.

What actually supports better studio behavior A few principles recur throughout the research's suggested solutions:

Prioritizing natural daylight through well-placed openings and skylights rather than defaulting to artificial lighting.

Positioning windows and skylights based on how the space is actually used — the angle relative to a working surface, not just the building's exterior form.

Controlling glare and harsh contrast, rather than simply maximizing brightness.

Using deliberate hoods, shading, or reflective control to manage where light lands inside a room.

Treating lighting as a factor in student health and psychological comfort, not just a technical or aesthetic afterthought.

Considering supporting natural elements — like a small reflective water feature or green space near a studio — as an additional way to soften and diffuse how light enters a working space.

The underlying goal wasn't simply a brighter studio, but one whose lighting actively supports concentration, comfort, and the kind of sustained creative attention design work demands.

Turning research into proposed designs The research translated these findings into two concrete design proposals for interior design studios: one centered on maximizing controlled sunlight through carefully placed windows, and a second centered on skylight systems that balance daylight with artificial support where needed. Both aim for the same outcome — as much usable, comfortable, glare-free light as possible across different times of day — while staying realistic about cost and the facilities available to student users.

Where this could go next The research is explicit that daylight's constant variability across seasons and weather is a real limitation of the current analysis, and flags this as a direction for future work — accounting more dynamically for how daylight changes rather than working from averaged conditions.

Because after looking closely at how lighting and behavior interact in these spaces, one conclusion is hard to avoid:

A studio doesn't just need enough light to work by — it needs light considered carefully enough that it supports, rather than quietly undermines, the students learning inside it.
