Using lights to enhance performance in studios of Interior design

But the more I looked into how these spaces actually function, the more one factor kept surfacing as decisive rather than decorative: lighting.
That observation became the starting point of this research.
Looking beyond the walls and the floor plan Most studios are designed to satisfy basic functional needs — enough room to work, enough surfaces to pin up drawings, enough seating for a class. But students in interior design studios don't just sit and listen. They sketch, model, present, and spend long stretches of time absorbed in detailed visual work.
I wanted to understand whether the lighting in these studios was actually shaping how students behaved and performed, or whether it was treated as an afterthought once the layout was already fixed.
Discovering that light shapes behavior, not just visibility Across the studios I examined, a consistent pattern emerged: lighting wasn't just about seeing the work in front of you. It was quietly influencing mood, concentration, comfort, and even long-term wellbeing.
Natural light entering through skylights and windows created a very different working atmosphere than fluorescent or other artificial sources. Where daylight was well distributed, students seemed more at ease and more engaged with their work. Where lighting relied heavily on artificial sources, the atmosphere felt flatter — and the research pointed to real physiological costs behind that flatness, not just an aesthetic preference.
Learning from how light actually behaves Rather than treating light as a single fixed quantity, it helps to think about how it moves through a space. Skylights and diffuse natural sources scatter light in a way that produces a soft, changing quality over the course of a day. Artificial emitters, by contrast, hold a constant output regardless of time or season. That difference matters: a studio lit only by constant artificial sources loses the subtle daily rhythm that natural light provides, a rhythm the body seems to rely on.
Positioning matters as much as intensity. A north-facing opening placed thoughtfully above a working surface can deliver directional light without glare, while a badly placed skylight can create harsh contrast or unwanted heat. Even small design choices — a hood over a window, a reflective ceiling, the angle of a skylight — change how usable a space feels for hours of detailed work.
Comparing what students need with what studios provide One of the most revealing parts of this research was comparing the physiological and psychological needs of students against the lighting conditions actually present in many existing studios.
The comparison showed a gap. Prolonged exposure to certain artificial lighting conditions has been linked in the literature to disrupted rhythms, mood changes, and reduced performance — effects that matter enormously in a setting where students may spend eight or more hours a day under the same light source. At the same time, studios that combined generous daylight with carefully controlled supplementary lighting supported longer, steadier periods of focused, creative work.
What actually supports better studio behavior A few principles kept recurring throughout the research:
Prioritizing daylight wherever the site allows it, rather than treating artificial light as the default.
Positioning skylights and windows based on how students actually use the space, not just on the building's exterior form.
Controlling glare and harsh contrast rather than simply maximizing brightness.
Being deliberate about artificial lighting's color and intensity, since both affect mood and biological rhythms over time.
Treating lighting as a factor in student wellbeing and safety, not only as a technical or aesthetic detail.
The goal isn't simply a brighter studio — it's a studio whose lighting actively supports the concentration, comfort, and creative stamina design work demands.
Turning research into practical proposals The most useful part of this work was moving from observation to proposal. Two directions stood out: designs that make deliberate use of natural sunlight through openings positioned to avoid glare, and designs built around skylights that balance daylight with controlled artificial support. Both approaches aim for the same outcome — as much usable, comfortable light as possible across different times of day and weather conditions — while remaining economically realistic for the institutions that will build and maintain these spaces.
Where this could go next This research focused on interior design studios specifically, but the underlying question reaches further. As more institutions rethink how creative and technical work happens indoors, there's real value in exploring how lighting design can be built into studio planning from the start, rather than retrofitted once the walls are already up.
Because after looking closely at how light and behavior interact in these spaces, one conclusion is hard to avoid:
Good designers aren't only shaped by what they're taught — they're shaped by the quality of light they work under while learning it.
