About Helen Silvester

Helen Silvester is a neuroscientist by training and a passionate science teacher by profession. She enjoys all forms of science communication from teaching to presenting, from designing curriculum to writing textbooks. She has over twenty years’ experience in education, having taught general science to 3 year olds and biology to 18 year olds. Her love of the biological sciences originated during her B.Sc. (Hons) at Walter Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research where she investigated the immunological response to fetal brain transplantation. This was followed by research at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne. Helen has provided many professional development sessions to teachers across Victoria and has been involved in curriculum development at all levels. She is one of the leading science teachers providing resources and advice to teachers through the Australian Science Teachers Association ASSIST, and is a Life Science Assessor for South African Schools through VCAA. She has written textbooks and teacher resources for all year levels. Currently she is Head of Science at Mentone Girls’ Grammar School.
