About Cigdem Avci-Karatas
I am an Associate Professor in Structural and Earthquake Engineering at Yalova University, where I currently serve as the Head of the Transportation Engineering Department. My expertise includes seismic retrofitting, buckling-restrained braces (BRBs), and performance-based design of reinforced concrete and steel structures.
I received my Ph.D. from Istanbul Technical University, where I developed and tested a metallic seismic energy dissipation device known as TURKBRACE-BRB. My doctoral research, which earned the 2013 Best Ph.D. Thesis Award in Structural Engineering, focused on the full-scale experimental testing of BRBs using both steel and aluminum alloy cores.
My current research extends to climate-resilient infrastructure, sustainable urban transformation, and disaster risk mitigation. I have authored SCIE- and Scopus-indexed publications and serve as a reviewer and editorial board member for various international journals. I supervise both master's and Ph.D. theses in the fields of earthquake engineering, infrastructure planning, and urban resilience.
Prior to joining academia, I worked as a technical consultant for the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning and contributed to JICA-led seismic microzonation studies in Istanbul. I continue to collaborate with industry and provide consulting services in the fields of structural safety, design compliance (EC3/EC4), and advanced materials in construction.
