About Giuliana B. Prato
Dr Giuliana B. Prato is Hon. Professor in Social Anthropology at the University of Kent. She has done fieldwork in Italy, England, France and Albania. Her primary research interest is the relationship between ideologies and practice and their impact on individuals’ lives and society. She published extensively on political change, legitimacy, citizenship, governance, corruption, inequalities, socio-economic policies, transnational politics of immigration, including Arbëresh and contemporary Albanian migrations to Italy, linguistic minorities, comparative analysis on “new” migrations in Europe and, more recently, on healthcare and public health policies, and the ethical and socio-economic implications of digital technologies and AI applications in health, education and governance. She has held lecturing positions in London and Kent and Visiting Professorships across Europe. She is co-editor (with Italo Pardo) of the Series Palgrave Studies in Urban Anthropology. She chaired the Commission on Urban Anthropology (IUAES) and co-founded both the journal Urbanities-Journal of Urban Ethnography, and the non-profit association International Urban Symposium-IUS, of which she is Secretary-Treasurer. She co-directs the IUS Field Training School on “Urban Research: Methodology and Theory”, which is attended by international interdisciplinary scholars and professionals. Among her publications: Beyond Multiculturalism (2009), City Life and Beyond in Times of Pandemic (2020); and, with Italo Pardo, Citizenship and the Legitimacy of Governance (2010), The Palgrave Handbook of Urban Ethnography (2017), Urban Inequalities (2021), and several articles for the Palgrave platform “Social Science Matters”.
