About Pierfrancesco Burrato
I am a Senior Researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), where I specialise in earthquake geology and tectonic geomorphology. My scientific work is centred on identifying, characterising, and assessing seismogenic sources—active faults with potential to generate earthquakes—and understanding the geomorphic signatures of tectonic deformation.
I obtained a Master of Science degree in Structural Geology and Geomorphology in 1995, which laid the foundation for my subsequent research on how landscape features and structural geology reveal seismotectonic processes. Since then, I have contributed to field investigations, remote sensing, geologic mapping, and quantitative morphometric analysis to better define fault geometry, slip rates, paleoseismic behaviour, and seismic hazard.
In addition to my research role, I lecture in the course “Geology and Geography of Seismic and Volcanic Hazards” (GEO/03) in the Geographical Sciences Bachelor’s program at Sapienza University of Rome, integrating academic teaching with my research interests in seismicity and hazard assessment.
I also hold the National Scientific Qualification (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) for Associate Professor in the scientific sector 04/A2 (Structural Geology), which attests to my recognized competence in my field.
My work is documented in multiple projects and publications; a repository of seismogenic source data and related research outputs is available at the INGV dissertation archive.
