About Sandra Hervías-Parejo
I am an island ecologist investigating how island communities form and function in the context of global change. By focusing on unique systems such as the Azores, Madeira, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Galápagos, and Seychelles, I aim to understand the dynamics of biotic interactions and their responses to anthropogenic impacts, particularly the introduction of invasive species and species extinctions.
My research combines empirical trait-based studies of species interactions with complex ecological networks to evaluate the causes and consequences of global change and species loss on ecosystem dynamics. Recently, I have expanded my focus to encompass interaction networks across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions, utilizing theoretical multilayer network models to develop future scenarios for ecological communities and ecosystem functions influenced by human activity.
Ultimately, my goal is to enhance predictions of community responses to global change and to illuminate how biodiversity loss impacts ecosystem functioning, particularly in the context of restoration programs.
