About Steve Whittaker, PhD

I retired from King County's Hazardous Waste Management Program and Public Health-Seattle & King County in January 2024, where I developed a passion for helping prevent chemical exposures in communities that do not enjoy the power and privileges that many of us take for granted. Examples of successful projects included promoting the use of relatively low toxicity water-based paints in auto body shops, switching dry cleaners from using toxic perchloroethylene to water-based processes, and helping our local Afghan community switch from lead-containing cookware to safer alternatives.  I am passionate about helping residents and workers adopt safer products and processes, with a focus on equity and social justice.

I also hold an Affiliate faculty position at the University of Washington. I serve on the thesis committees of graduate students in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) and participate in lectures and workshops concerning risk assessment and toxicology.
