Assessing climate change impacts on flood risk in the Yeongsan River Basin, South Korea

Flood risk prediction is crucial as extreme weather events become more frequent. Our study shows that flood risks in the Yeongsan River Basin could increase by up to 65% by the end of the century. This paper is a detailed flood risk assessment using global climate models and a hydrological model. We simulated streamflow and reservoir outflow data for baseline, mid-century, and end-century scenarios. The study found that most sub-basins are projected to face higher flood risks, and adaptive strategies are necessary to manage both flash floods and longer-term flooding. The spatial distribution of flood risk helps prioritise regions for preventive measures. However, more work is still needed to refine these strategies and ensure effective flood management in the face of climate change.
