Collection Overview

Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on AI and ML in veterinary medicine.

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds immense potential to transform veterinary medicine by supporting veterinarians in diagnosis, screening, and predictive modelling through advanced machine learning approaches, including supervised, self-supervised, and foundation models. AI applications span image analysis, early disease detection, streamlining administrative tasks, and disease surveillance. Large language models can integrate diverse datasets, from electronic health records and medical images to pathology reports and wearable sensor data sourced from veterinary hospitals, research centres, and diagnostic labs. Future opportunities in Veterinary AI include developing models that would be trained on diverse datasets and appropriately benchmarked, accelerating discovery via cross-disciplinary research, and effectively integrating AI among veterinary professionals.

This will be a Collection of original research papers and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 20th August 2026.

Why is this Collection important?

“This Collection on AI and ML in veterinary medicine tackles the urgent need for precision and efficiency in animal healthcare, which directly impacts food security, public health (zoonoses), and animal welfare. I'm excited by the potential to collect and publish some groundbreaking work - from automated veterinary diagnostics to case by case treatment planning - that will define the future of veterinary practice. It will be trully important to establish a high-visibility benchmark for this rapidly evolving scientific field and researchers should take advantage of the opportunity to submit to a high-prestigious journal and ensure the maximum citation and influence among the relevant experts working on these technologies.” - Dr. George Valiakos

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good health and Well-beingSDG 9: Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 15: Life on Land.

Why submit to a Collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.

Who is involved?

Guest Editors:

  • Tommaso Banzato, University of Padua, Italy
  • Beatriz Martínez-López, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, USA
  • George Valiakos, University of Thessaly, Greece

Internal Team:

  • In-House Editor: Githa George, Scientific Reports, India
  • Commissioning Editor: Louisa Beckett, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
  • Managing Editor: Aliya Anwar, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
