● Call for papers: Engineering Solutions in Wind Energy Systems: Design, Efficiency, and Sustainability
Published in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering
What is this collection about?
As the global transition toward decarbonization accelerates, wind energy has emerged as a cornerstone of renewable power systems, driving efforts to achieve net-zero goals. However, despite significant advancements, the wind energy sector still faces critical challenges, including optimizing performance, improving energy conversion efficiency, and ensuring sustainability of turbine systems.
In this collection, we aim to showcase cutting-edge research and developments that advance the efficiency and sustainability of wind energy systems, from turbine design and performance optimization to conversion, maintenance, multifunctional wind turbine foundations, and end-of-life management. We seek contributions that explore new approaches to overcome technical bottlenecks and optimize operational performance.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
1. Turbine design and performance optimization: wind turbine blade design, adaptive control systems, emerging turbine, technologies such as floating offshore wind turbines, vertical-axis wind turbines and airborne wind energy systems, digital twin technologies for optimizing performance, preferences for wind turbines
2. Energy Conversion and Power Electronics: High-efficiency generators, wind energy conversion systems, smart inverters, fault-diagnosis technologies
3. Multifunctional Wind Turbine Foundations: Integrated energy storage systems, hybrid platform designs such as combined wind-wave-solar, integration with marine ranching, reuse and retrofit strategies for existing foundations
4. Maintenance and End-of-Life: IoT-enabled condition monitoring, AI-driven predictive maintenance and recycling of wind turbines, end-of-life of wind turbine blades
Why is this collection important?
- This Collection supports and amplifies research directly related to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) – Affordable & Clean Energy.
Why submit to a collection?
- Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors and In-House Editors who are experts in their fields and supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores, and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.
Who is involved?
Aly Mousaad Aly, PhD, Louisiana State University, USA
Aly Mousaad Aly, an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University, leverages interdisciplinary expertise spanning Civil, Mechanical, and Aerospace Engineering. His research history is dedicated to developing transformative technological solutions for resilient infrastructure and advanced wind engineering, notably integrating Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with Machine Learning and Deep Learning for accelerated wind load predictions. As the founder and director of LSU's Windstorm Impact Science and Engineering (WISE) program and its Open-Jet testing facility, he pioneers high-fidelity simulations that uniquely achieve complete atmospheric boundary layer turbulence at high Reynolds numbers, a significant advance over traditional wind tunnels.
Yu Zhou, PhD, Harbin Engineering University, China
Yu Zhou is a Professor of Ocean Engineering and Renewable Energy at Harbin Engineering University. He specializes in floating offshore wind turbine hydrodynamics and its integration with wave-energy devices; his research spans analytical modelling, numerical simulation, and experimental model testing of coupled offshore energy platforms. He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed journal articles — including papers in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Coastal Engineering, Energy, and Energy Conversion and Management — and serves as a reviewer for several international journals.
Communications Engineering is edited by both in-house professional editors and Editorial Board Members.
