What is this collection about? 

Indoor environments can contain a complex mixture of chemical, particulate, and biological air pollutants, shaped by household activities, building design, ventilation, and the wider outdoor environment. Exposure to poor indoor air quality can cause acute and chronic health conditions and contributes to millions of deaths annually.

In this Collection, the editors at Communications Health invite submissions that advance understanding of how indoor air quality affects human health across homes, workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities and other indoor environments. We welcome original research Articles that, for example, characterise pollutant exposures, quantify health impacts, or evaluate interventions to improve air quality. We will also consider Comments, Reviews or Perspectives that evaluate current evidence, identify methodological or policy challenges, or outline strategies to support the design of healthier indoor environments.

Why is this collection important? 

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) – Good Health and Well-being, by advancing understanding of the health impacts of indoor air pollution and identifying effective strategies to reduce harmful exposures. As people spend the majority of their time indoors, improving indoor air quality is critical for preventing disease, promoting healthy living environments, and reducing the global burden of morbidity and premature mortality associated with air pollution.
