Collection Overview

Scientific Reports has launched a Guest-Edited Collection on Optical coatings

Optical coatings play a crucial role in enhancing the performance of optical systems across various applications, including telecommunications, medical devices, and scientific instrumentation. These coatings are designed to manipulate light through reflection, transmission, and absorption, thereby improving the efficiency and functionality of optical components. Recent advancements in materials science and nanotechnology have led to the development of the next generation of coating techniques, enabling precise control over optical properties at the nanoscale. The exploration of new materials and fabrication methods has opened up exciting possibilities for creating coatings with tailored characteristics, such as anti-reflective, high-reflective, and wavelength-selective properties. These advancements are driving significant progress in fields like photonics, laser technology, and imaging systems, where high-performance optical coatings are essential.

This will be a Collection of original research papers  and will be open for submissions from all authors – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of Scientific Reports more generally. We are welcoming submissions until 23rd April 2026.

Why is this Collection important?

"The Optical Coating Collection excites me because it is a fundamental technology that boosts the development of broad areas in photonics and optoelectronics, covering nanophotonics, integrated optics, precision optics, imaging, sensing, and spectroscopy.""

- Dr. Zhenzhou Cheng, Guest Editor

Why submit to a collection?

Collections like this one help promote high-quality science. They are led by Guest Editors, who are experts in their fields, and In-House Editors and are supported by a dedicated team of Commissioning Editors and Managing Editors at Springer Nature. Collection manuscripts typically see higher citations, downloads, and Altmetric scores and provide a one-stop-shop on a cutting-edge topic of interest.

Who is involved?

Guest Editors:

  • Zhenzhou Cheng, Tianjin University, China
  • Yong Xie, Xidian University, China

Internal Team:

  • In-House Editor: Silvia ButeraScientific Reports, UK
  • Commissioning Editor: Robert Moran, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
  • Managing Editor: Rebecca Chan, Fully OA Brands, Springer Nature, UK
